CNHA to host 2024 Native Hawaiian Convention on Hawai‘i Island

21st annual Native Hawaiian Convention. File 2022

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) will host its 2024 Native Hawaiian Convention on Hawai‘i Island at the Hilton Waikoloa Village from Sept. 17 to Sept. 19, 2024. The three-day event will feature discussions and workshops on cultural perpetuation, housing, fashion, tourism, education, and self-determination.

With the theme “Experience Hawai‘i Island,” this year’s convention will feature the cultural stories and communities of “Moku o Keawe” and will bring together the Hawaiian community, from ‘ōpio to kūpuna, in celebration of a path forward. 

Highlights of the convention include:

  • Focus on cultural perpetuation with more than 30 Kumu Hula participating along with numerous cultural practitioners;
  • Discussion of critical community issues such as rural health care, short-term rentals, Maunakea, Pohakuloa, and Red Hill;
  • More than 100 breakout sessions covering various topics, including education, homeownership, business resources, and self-determination;
  • Conversations around the regenerative tourism model and the future of tourism from the lens of Native Hawaiians; 
  • Exploration of the intersection of culture and fashion in Hawai‘i, featuring Hawaiian designers from Hawai‘i Island – Sig Zane, Manaola and Kaulua‘e;
  • Key note remarks from representatives from the US Department of Treasury and the US Department of Interior, Hawai‘i Governor Josh Green, First Lady Jamie Kanani Green, and others.

Event goers will have the opportunity to explore local Hawai‘i-owned businesses at the pop-up Mākeke, open daily from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the convention.

A Fashion, Food & Culture Showcase featuring some of Hawai‘i’s top designers, chefs and musicians will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 18 (separate tickets required).

On the final day of the convention, a live KHON debate will feature Hawai‘i Island mayoral candidates, Thursday, Sept. 19.
