Four injured when commercial catamaran runs aground on Kāʻanapali Beach

Four people were injured when a commercial catamaran ran aground on Kāʻanapali Beach in West Maui on Tuesday evening. The incident was reported at 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 10, 2024.

Personnel arrived to find the catamaran aground with 49 passengers and four crew members still aboard. Firefighters went aboard the vessel to check for injuries and found four individuals needing medical care. Two of the injured individuals were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further evaluation and care.

Firefighters also assisted passengers from the grounded vessel, according to department reports.

The crew made several unsuccessful attempts to free the vessel, according to initial reports. Once all individuals were off the vessel, the scene was turned over to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation confirmed reports that the Teralani IV, operated by Privacy Charters went aground. The incident is now under USCG jurisdiction since the boat is a commercial vessel.

DLNR reports that the vessel was removed this morning with no release of any hazardous materials reported.

Multiple agencies responded including the Maui fire and police departments, DOCARE and the US Coast Guard. MFD responding units included: Engine 3, Ladder 3, Engine 11 and a battalion chief. Crews left the scene at 9:02 p.m.
