Update: Report of stolen vehicle linked to highway closure in Pāʻia
A Hāna Highway closure early this morning stemmed from a report of a stolen vehicle in Māʻalaea, according to the Maui Police Department. The highway was fully re-opened as of approximately 12:20 p.m.
At approximately 1:31 a.m. today, officers observed a stolen vehicle reported stolen in Māʻalaea, police said. “Ignoring officers’ attempts to conduct a traffic stop, the driver continued onto Hāna Highway. Upon entering Pāʻia town, the driver struck a parked vehicle and a utility pole.”
The 17-year-old male driver was taken into police custody without further incident and later released to Family Court, police said.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
The road closure was initially reported shortly after 2 a.m. today. The Kahului-bound traffic lane was open as of around 6 a.m. The highway had been closed from Pāʻia Bay to Baldwin Avenue.
