Chinese New Year at Lahaina Cannery, Feb. 7

The Lahaina Cannery Mall welcomes a return of the annual Chinese New Year Celebration on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025. This year’s celebration marks the Year of the Snake, packed with cultural experiences, food and entertainment.

Schedule of Events:

  • Keiki Crafts – 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
    Bring the little ones to craft their own festive creations to celebrate the Year of the Snake. This activity will be held near the large kiosk in front of the T-Shirt Factory, offering a hands-on way for children to explore Chinese New Year traditions.
  • Lion Dance Performance – 2:30 p.m.
    On stage, a lion dance performance will usher in the New Year with luck and good fortune. In addition to the lion dance, red envelopes will be handed out to feed the lion, a tradition that symbolizes good luck and prosperity for the upcoming year.

Lawn Festivities (2 p.m. – 7 p.m.):

  • Food Booth – Only Ono
    A variety of authentic Chinese dishes, including roast pork, duck, Char Siu, Char Siu Bao, custard tarts, jung sticky rice, and chicken curry puffs are available for purchase.
  • Chinese Cultural Activities
    • Calligraphy: Try your hand at Chinese calligraphy and learn the art of brush writing.
    • Chinese Card Reading: Traditional Chinese card reading.
    • Keiki Cultural Crafts: Hands-on crafts for the kids, showcasing Chinese culture.
    • Chinese Cooking Demo – Gau Gee (Chinese Dumplings): Join Chef Bobby Santos for a cooking demonstration and free tastings of Chinese dumplings from 5-7 p.m.
    • Hong Zhou: Enjoy the soulful sounds of Hong Zhou as she performs on the Erhu, a traditional Chinese two-stringed bowed musical instrument.
  • Displays:
    • Wo Hing Society Historical Displays: Dive into the rich history of the Wo Hing Society and its cultural significance.
    • History of Chinese New Year: Learn about the customs, symbols, and traditions behind Chinese New Year through a tabletop PowerPoint display.
  • Retail:
    • Purchase Wo Hing Society T-shirts, tote bags and more.
    • Explore unique artworks from Lahaina Arts Society Artists.
  • Lion Dance Encore (Approx. 3:45 p.m.)
    The lion dancers will return to the event at around 3:45 p.m. with even more excitement and firecrackers to celebrate the festivities.
