Statement from Ulupono Initiative on governor’s executive order to promote and expedite renewable energy initiatives
Ulupono Initiative today commended Gov. Josh Green for issuing Executive Order No. 25-01, “Accelerating Hawaiʻi’s Transition Toward 100 Percent Renewable Energy,” which strengthens Hawaiʻi’s commitment to its clean energy and decarbonization goals.
The this action provides clarity and assurance that Hawaiʻi remains steadfast in its pursuit of a resilient, sustainable, and locally driven energy future. “By reinforcing the state’s commitment to 100% renewable energy and prioritizing equitable and cost-effective solutions, the governor’s executive order underscores the critical role of leadership in navigating the energy transition,” according to the Ulupono Initiative.
“We deeply appreciate Gov. Green for taking decisive action to reaffirm Hawaiʻi’s energy and climate commitments,” said Michael Colón, director, energy sector, at Ulupono Initiative. “This executive order ensures that we continue to make progress toward a clean energy future that is reliable, affordable, and sustainable. Leadership at the state level is more important than ever, and we stand ready to support efforts that drive innovation, resilience, and energy security for all of Hawaiʻi.”
The Initative reports that new data underscores the widespread support among Hawaiʻi residents for renewable energy. Between October 2023 and January 2024, Ulupono Initiative partnered with Anthology Research to conduct a statewide public opinion survey on energy in Hawaiʻi involving 1,985 surveys across all four counties. With a margin of error +/- 2.21%, this is arguably the most extensive and comprehensive study on the topic to date.
According to the findings: 91% of respondents expressed their support for the expansion of renewable energy resources throughout the islands. Moreover, the importance of developing Hawaiʻi’s own energy resources was emphasized across all counties by residents.
“This resounding endorsement from the community validates the strong support for continued investment and advancement in renewable energy solutions to meet our collective energy goals,” the Initiative reports.
