Update: Maui pedestrian struck by car on Dairy Road, succumbs to injuries

Update:

On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 4:01 p.m., the pedestrian involved in Monday night’s accident on Dairy Road, succumbed to her injuries and died while at Maui Memorial Medical Center.   The pedestrian is identified as Artemis Kagel, 71, of Kahului.

The Maui Police Department extended condolences to Kagel’s family and friends.

This was Maui County’s ninth traffic fatality of 2025, compared to five at the same time last year.

A 71-year-old Kahului woman sustained life-threatening injuries when she was struck by a vehicle while walking across Dairy Road on Monday night.

The incident was reported at 8:32 p.m. on April 28, 2025, on Dairy Road, approximately 274 feet north of Maui Marketplace Drive in Kahului.

Police say a preliminary investigation reveals that the woman was walking in a northwest direction across Dairy Road, outside of a marked crosswalk, when she was struck by a white 2005 Toyota Solara traveling southwest in the left inner lane. 

As a result of this collision, the pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

The operator of the Toyota, a 63-year-old Wailea woman, did not report any injuries. 

The operator of the Toyota was reportedly wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision.  

Police say the involvement of speed, alcohol, and drugs has not been determined yet, as the investigation remains ongoing.
