Heats set for Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem at Hoʻokipa Beach Park, May 17–18

The 21st annual Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem youth surf contest will take place May 17–18, 2025, at Hoʻokipa Beach Park. The free, family-friendly event celebrates Maui’s keiki surfers with two days of wave-riding, community and environmental awareness.

Heat Schedule and Priority System

The tentative heat schedule is now available here. Schedule and heat times are subject to change.

This year, the competition implements priority rules for the following divisions starting after Round 1 during 3- and 4-person heats:

  • Boys 12–13
  • Girls 12–13
  • Boys 14–15
  • Girls 14–15

The priority system follows World Surf League guidelines. Parents and competitors unfamiliar with the rules are encouraged to speak with the head judge at the event. For reference, the WSL rulebook is available here (priority rules on page 57).

Real-time scoring, heat draws and results will be accessible throughout the weekend. Organizers urge participants to arrive early and stay flexible, as heat times may shift due to surf conditions or other unforeseen changes.

If a competitor is unable to attend, families are asked to notify organizers by emailing menehunemayhem@gmail.com to allow waitlisted youth the chance to participate.

Zero-Waste

The event continues its partnership with Maui Huliau Foundation to promote zero-waste practices. Attendees are encouraged to carpool, avoid single-use plastics and utilize the zero-waste stations set up at the beach park.

Boards 4 Buddies will be on-site to collect gently used skateboards and surfboards to donate to youth in underserved communities. Donors will be entered into a raffle to win a board.

Code of Conduct and Parking

Participants are reminded to demonstrate positive behavior throughout the weekend. Any unsportsmanlike conduct may result in disqualification at the sole discretion of the Menehune Mayhem team. Beachgoers should follow all posted parking restrictions at Hoʻokipa and park legally.
