Visitor injured during mountain hike in EastMaui, airlifted to safety

A 25-year-old Arizona man suffered injuries to his hip, lower back and arm after slipping and falling during a hike in the mountains of East Maui, Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 12:44 p.m. on May 26, near Mile 22 of the Hāna Highway.

Fire officials say the man slipped and fell while hiking on a trail mauka of the roadway, and was unable to walk out.

Firefighters from Engine 7 located the injured man and Rescue 10 firefighters aboard the department’s Air 1 helicopter were able to lift him from the trail.

He was transported to Hāna Airport and then transferred to the Maui Memorial Medical Center via medevac for further care.
