Kīhei man succumbs to injuries from moped crash near Piʻikea roundabout

A Maui man has succumbed to injuries sustained in a single vehicle moped crash on Līloa Drive near the Piʻikea Avenue roundabout reported last week in Kīhei. Maui police have since identified the man as Kenneth Gricus, 62, of Kīhei.
According to department reports, Gricus was operating a red 2022 YN moped and was traveling north on Līloa Drive when he lost control while approaching the roundabout. The incident was reported at around 9:52 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Police say the moped began to weave before striking the raised curb near the southern crosswalk. As a result of the impact, the moped overturned, ejecting the operator.
Gricus was initially transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition, but did not survive his injuries and passed away on Monday morning, June 2, 2025.
A police investigation reveals that a helmet was not worn at the time of the crash. Speed is not considered a factor. Police continue their investigation into the cause of the crash, which has not yet been determined.
This was Maui County’s 12th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to seven at the same time last year.
