Street art project in Kīhei completed, final comments requested

The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization announced the completion of South Maui Quick Build: Street Art Project at the intersection of Kenolio Road and Alulike Street in Kīhei. The final design captured the essence of the Kalepolepo Fishpond (also known as Koʻieʻie Fishpond) on the makai side of the intersection, and the Kūlanihāko’i wetlands and sand dunes on the mauka side.
Now that the street art is complete, final feedback is requested. The public is invited to take a short survey to help improve future efforts. Link to Community Post-Implementation Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DYD6R7J
“Big mahalo to everyone who got involved in the project – we were able to transform blank asphalt into a beautiful expression of South Maui’s rich history and culture,” said Kauanoe Batangan, Maui MPO executive director. “Most importantly, our efforts have enhanced not only the aesthetics of the corridor, but also the safety for all road users.”
The street art is the final component of the multi-phase project, and now serves as a traffic calming measure. It promotes awareness among all road users, adds vibrant color that reflects local culture, and strengthens the neighborhood’s sense of place.

This project was made possible because of the support and participation of the South Maui community. The street art design was inspired by ideas and preferences of more than 100 survey respondents. The project team was joined on Painting Day by more than 50 volunteers that brought the design to life.
The South Maui Quick Build Street Art Project is a collaboration between the Maui MPO, the County of Maui Department of Public Works, the Department of Planning, the State Department of Health, the Healthy Eating + Active Living Coalition, and SSFM International. This project is supported by the Ulupono Fund at the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation.
