Kahua Grant Initiative. PC: Maui United Way

Maui United Way announces the launch of its Kahua Grant Initiative, a new program designed to provide capacity-building support to emerging and grassroots nonprofits across Maui County. The program aims to equip participating organizations with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to build a strong foundation for long-term sustainability and deeper community impact.

With a particular focus on Maui County-based organizations engaged in wildfire recovery efforts, the initiative is part of Maui United Way’s broader commitment to supporting locally driven solutions in the wake of the August 2023 fires.

The first cohort of the Kahua Grant Initiative will run from July 3, 2025, through April 30, 2026. In partnership with SR Partners LLC, experienced grant consultants, the initiative will provide funding, technical assistance, and peer learning opportunities to selected participants. Through the program, organizations will:

  • Expand partnerships and networks
  • Develop grant prospecting skills
  • Strategically plan and pursue funding opportunities
  • Write compelling needs statements
  • Build confidence in grant writing
  • Gain long-term funding sustainability

Applications are now open, with a deadline of Friday, June 27, 2025. Organizations selected for the cohort will be notified via email on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

“This program is about planting seeds that will support long-term resilience in our nonprofit sector,” said Jason Economou, President & CEO of Maui United Way. “By investing in the growth and development of grassroots nonprofit organizations, we’re helping to ensure that community-driven solutions can thrive well into the future.”

The Kahua Grants Initiative is made possible through support from Maui United Way funds, along with generous grants from the Castle Foundation, Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, and the Kaiser Family Foundation.
