Pacific Whale Foundation, the Marine Mammal Research Program at the University of Hawaiʻi and Maui Ocean Center present the Hawaiʻi premiere of “Call of the Dolphins” — a new IMAX documentary narrated by Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning actress Mary Steenburgen and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Bird.

This special event will take place Wednesday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Maui Ocean Center, beginning with a hosted reception at Seascape Restaurant, featuring two complimentary drinks and hearty pūpū. Following the film screening, guests are invited to an exclusive Q&A with the creative and scientific minds behind the film.

“Call of the Dolphins” offers audiences an immersive dive into the lives of wild dolphins, revealing their complex social behavior, remarkable intelligence and deep connection with humans. Filmed in part on Maui aboard PWF’s research vessel Kaiao, the documentary features never-before-seen footage of pilot whales and groundbreaking CATs tag deployments conducted by PWF and the University of Hawaiʻi research teams.

“Dolphins are some of the most revered creatures on the planet, and humans have long felt a deep bond with these intelligent animals,” said director Jonathan Bird.

Jens Currie, chief scientist at Pacific Whale Foundation, added, “Filming ‘Call of the Dolphins’ gave us a unique opportunity to bring the story of pilot whales and the cutting-edge science behind them, to the public.”

“It has been a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with filmmakers to tell meaningful stories about these incredible animals,” said professor Lars Bejder, director of the Marine Mammal Research Program at the University of Hawaiʻi. “Working together, we’re able to reach far broader audiences and share vital scientific insights with the world.”
