Update: Water service gradually returns following well outage in West Kuiaha and Awalau areas of Haʻikū

After a severe electrical issue caused a well outage Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, Department of Water Supply (DWS) water service gradually returned to affected areas of Haʻikū and surrounding communities beginning Monday afternoon.
DWS staff monitored the well overnight and confirmed that water service has been restored as of early this morning, Aug. 25.
Water buffalos will remain available at the same locations throughout today for residents who may still need access to water.

Approximately 200 customers in West Kuiaha and Awalau areas of Haʻikū have had low water pressure or no water since 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, due to a well outage, according to the County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS). Drinking water tanks have been stationed in the area until service is restored.
The DWS well is out of service due to major electrical issues impacting its pump, and there is currently no estimated timeline for repair. Since the outage, DWS crews have been on the scene, working on the pump and monitoring the system.

Drinking water tanks, also known as water buffaloes, have been deployed throughout the affected Haʻikū areas:
- Hanzawa’s Variety Store: Two tanks
- West Kuiaha Road: Three tanks (1050 W. Kuiaha, 1436 W. Kuiaha and 1860 W. Kuiaha roads)
- East Kuiaha Road: Two tanks (365 E. Kuiaha and 700 E. Kuiaha roads)
- Pakanu Street: One tank (650 Pakanu St.)
- Peʻahi Road: One tank (185 Peʻahi Road)
- Hahana Road: One tank (bottom of Hahana Road, off Hāna Highway)
- Holokai Road: One tank (bottom of Holokai Road, off Hāna Highway)
