Maui firefighters respond to Waikō brush fire; One person treated for smoke inhalation

Maui fire crews responded to a half acre brush fire in the Waikō area of Central Maui, Tuesday night.  The fire was reported at 7:07 p.m., west of the Kuihelani Highway and north of East Waikō Road. 

Firefighters navigated a difficult-to-access area, but once on scene, they quickly contained the fire.

Department officials say one male working in a workshop suffered smoke inhalation and was treated on scene by Emergency Medical Service personnel.  

No evacuations or road closures were necessary.  

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 7:55 p.m. and extinguished it at 8:48 p.m.  The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Responding units included Engine 10, Mini 10, Tanker 10, Engine 1, Mini 1, Tanker 14, Tanker 50 and a battalion chief.
