AAA: Hawaiʻi gas prices remain elevated ahead of Labor Day travel weekend

Hawaiʻi gas prices remain elevated, with drivers paying more at the pump than they were this time last year, according to the AAA Hawaiʻi Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average price for regular unleaded is $5.41 per gallon, which is one cent lower than last week and 94 cents higher than this time last year. The average national price is $4.09 per gallon, which is one cent lower than last week and 89 cents higher than a year ago.

At $5.41 per gallon, Hawaiʻi has the second-highest average gas price in the nation, behind California at $5.63. Washington ranks third at $5.27.

• The average price in Kahului is $5.44 per gallon, one cent lower than last week and 95 cents higher than a year ago.
• In Honolulu, today’s average price for regular unleaded gas is $5.34 per gallon, which is two cents lower than last week and 96 cents higher than a year ago.
• The Hilo average gas price is $5.53 per gallon, which is three cents higher than last week and 87 cents higher than a year ago.
• Līhuʻe’s average regular gas price is $5.80 per gallon, which is one cent lower than last week and 79 cents higher than a year ago.

“With crude oil in the $80 per barrel range, continued uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the conflict in the Middle East, drivers could continue to see upward pressure on gas prices headed into the Labor Day holiday travel weekend,” said AAA Hawaiʻi spokesperson Kandace Redd. “Drivers should compare prices, look for discounts, [and] plan ahead… ”
