AccuWeather: Deadly Nepal ice-rock avalanche causes $6 Billion to $10 Billion in damage and economic loss

An ice-rock avalanche initiated a deadly flood that devastated communities and infrastructure along the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli River corridor in Nepal, causing an estimated $6 billion to $10 billion in total damage and economic loss, according to a preliminary report from AccuWeather experts.
“The devastation in Nepal is heartbreaking. Families and entire communities are dealing with a tremendous loss of life and destruction, while damage to critical infrastructure is making an already difficult situation even more challenging,” AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said.“The full scope of this disaster will take time to understand, and recovery in some of the hardest-hit communities could be a long and difficult process that takes years.”
This preliminary estimate includes direct and indirect impacts from the flood, emergency response expenses, and immediate and long-term health impacts. The extensive damage to roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure could lead to prolonged transportation, business and utility disruptions as communities begin what is expected to be a significant recovery and rebuilding effort.
Glacier collapse created a surge of water, mud and debris
A large glacier collapse triggered the event in Nepal’s Rasuwa District and Gyirong County near the Nepal–China border registering a 5.2 seismic signal. The debris from the collapse combined with rock, mud and water entered nearby rivers producing a massive tsunami-like surge through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli corridors.
AccuWeather experts say it is too early to attribute this individual disaster directly to climate change, but an apparent pattern of glacier-melt may have played a role.
“Studies have shown that glacier-melt has rapidly increased, and all 23 high mountain glaciers in the region lost mass in 2025, according to a recent report,” said AccuWeather expert meteorologist Brett Anderson. “It is too early to say definitively that climate change directly triggered this collapse, but warming temperatures are certainly transforming the Himalayan landscape.”
Studies show that the Himalaya region has been warming much faster than the historical average pace of earth as a whole. This has led to glacier retreat throughout this massive mountain region and contributed to significant erosion and unstable mountain slopes leading to an increased risk for enormous landslides and the collapse of glaciers.
“Retreating glaciers can also leave large depressions that can form into glacier lakes,” Anderson said.“As the region continues to steadily warm over the coming decades the threat for sudden landslides of ice and rock will continue to increase, putting more villages in the region at risk.”
As of Aug. 28, authorities in Nepal and China have officially counted more than 550 deaths, with more than 1,500 still missing across the region, which includes the western China region of Tibet.
The financial toll of deadly mudslide
The destruction has left communities isolated and created major challenges for search-and-rescue operations and the delivery of emergency supplies. Nepalese authorities have mobilized security forces, disaster-management agencies, health services, and helicopters to reach survivors and evacuate people from affected areas.
The transportation network has been especially hit hard. At least 41 bridges have been destroyed, while roughly 13 kilometers (8 miles) of the Prithvi Highway have been buried under mud and debris. Another roughly 10-kilometer (6-mile) stretch of roadway remains closed.
“Cleaning up from a disaster of this magnitude will be an enormous undertaking. Massive amounts of mud, rock and debris will have to be removed before some roads, bridges and communities can fully reopen, and that process could take months or longer in the hardest-hit areas,” Porter added. “Nepal is located between India and China making these transportation corridors especially important. The loss of critical roads and bridges can disrupt the movement of people, emergency supplies and commerce, adding to the economic impact and making the recovery even more challenging.”
AccuWeather’s preliminary estimate of $6 billion to $10 billion in total damage and economic loss extends far beyond property damage. The disaster will create widespread and potentially long-lasting economic consequences through damage to communities, infrastructure, businesses, natural resources, and public health.
The preliminary estimate from AccuWeather accounts for damage to homes, businesses, vehicles, crops, forests, utilities and infrastructure. It also includes emergency response expenses, evacuation, temporary housing, debris removal, environmental restoration, business interruptions, tourism losses, and anticipated insurance claims.
Health-related impacts include emergency medical care, hospitalizations, lost productivity, and the immediate and long-term physical and mental health effects associated with evacuations and displacement.
