Hawaiʻi State Capitol closed for operations on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026 due to Hurricane Lowell

The Hawaiʻi State Capitol will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 8, following Gov. Josh Green’s announcement regarding the closure of state offices on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi due to Hurricane Lowell impacts. 

The Hawaiʻi State Senate and House of Representatives offices, Legislative Reference Bureau, including the Public Access Room and LRB Library, and other legislative services will be closed to the public. State legislators and their offices remain available to assist constituents by phone and email. Contact information for all legislators is available at capitol.hawaii.gov. 

“As we feel the impact of Hurricane Lowell, my thoughts are with the people of Kauaʻi and communities across the state that may be affected. I know our residents have been preparing for this storm, and I encourage everyone to remain vigilant, stay informed, and continue to follow the guidance of state and county emergency officials,” said Senate President Ronald D. Kouchi. 

“We are keeping the Capitol closed out of an abundance of caution. My thoughts are with my island home of Kauaʻi as our community braces for potentially severe impacts. We are closely monitoring the situation in real time and will continue to provide updates as they become available. I urge everyone to stay safe, stay alert, and be prepared,” said Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura.
