Maui Bicycling League is inviting all candidates seeking Maui County or State offices representing West Maui to attend a nonpartisan community gathering on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, and share their perspectives on the future of West Maui’s multimodal transportation network.

Organizers say West Maui is entering an important period of transportation and community development, with significant federal, State and County investments moving forward. Projects such as the Honoapiʻilani Highway Realignment, Lahaina Bypass Extension, Keawe Street safety improvements, Lower Honoapiʻilani Road improvements and the West Maui Greenway offer a unique opportunity to create a safer, better-connected transportation network, organizers said.

The Sept. 12 gathering will give riders and community members an opportunity to hear how candidates believe these projects should work together to improve safety, connectivity and transportation choices for people walking, bicycling, taking transit and driving throughout West Maui.

The event will also offer participants a special opportunity to experience newly reopened Front Street by bicycle and see how this important part of Lahaina is taking shape following the August 2023 wildfire.

Participants may choose from three ride options:

• Long Route – 32.4 miles round trip: Meet at 7:45 a.m. at Haycraft Park in Māʻalaea. The route includes approximately 1,200 feet of elevation gain and a maximum grade of 7%.
• Short Route – 13.6 miles round trip: Meet the group at 8:30 a.m. near Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop in Olowalu.
• Front Street Community Ride: Candidates and community members who do not wish to participate in one of the longer routes may join MBL at Fork & Salad Lahaina for a shorter ride along newly reopened Front Street.

Following the rides, participants will gather at Fork & Salad Lahaina at approximately 10:30 a.m. for brunch, refreshments, and the candidate conversation.

Candidates are welcome to participate in any of the bicycle rides, but riding is not required. Candidates who prefer not to ride may join the group at Fork & Salad Lahaina for brunch and the community conversation at approximately 10:30 a.m. All participating candidates will be welcomed equally as part of this nonpartisan community event.

“This is an important moment for West Maui,” said Saman Dias, Chair and Co-Founder of Maui Bicycling League. “Major transportation and recovery investments are moving forward, and we have an opportunity to ensure they work together to create safer streets, meaningful bicycle and pedestrian connections, and better transportation choices for our community. We want residents to hear directly from those seeking to represent West Maui about how they would help advance that vision.”

Brunch and refreshments will be provided by Maui Bicycling League. Brunch is complimentary for MBL members, and nonmembers are welcome with a donation. Additional donations supporting MBL’s advocacy and community programs are always greatly appreciated.

The long and short routes are intended for intermediate and advanced riders who can maintain an average speed of 12–14 mph. E-bikes are welcome, but all e-bike riders are expected to follow MBL’s safety and etiquette guidelines. Bicycles are not provided, and helmets are required for all riders.

Advance registration is required for all community participants. To attend the ride, brunch or community conversation, community members must register for one of the three ride options: the Long Route, Short Route or Front Street Community Ride. Brunch is reserved for registered ride participants, and walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

Candidates seeking public office may participate in a ride or attend only the brunch and community conversation, but they must RSVP to Maui@hbl.org to confirm their attendance and receive event updates.
