A 61-year-old Wailuku woman suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle while walking across Kaʻahumanu Avenue, Wednesday night. The incident was reported at 9:43 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2026 on Kaʻahumanu Avenue, 0.2 miles east of South Papa Avenue in Kahului.

A preliminary investigation reveals that a white 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling eastbound, within the inner eastbound lane on Kaʻahumanu Avenue, approaching the intersection of South Wākea Avenue, when it struck the woman, who was walking northbound and was not within a marked crosswalk, according to police.

As a result of this collision, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld for 24 hours to allow her family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends.

The operator of the Equinox, a 70-year-old Wailuku man, was uninjured.

Police say the operator was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. The involvement of speed, drugs, or alcohol has not yet been determined, as the investigation is ongoing.

This marked Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
