Water conservation requested in Upcountry Maui during Kamole Water Treatment Plant upgrade

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is asking customers in Upcountry Maui to conserve water while the Kamole Water Treatment Plant undergoes a membrane retrofit upgrade. The six- to eight-week project includes installation of replacement membranes, a new control system and other associated improvements. The conservation request is in effect now until the upgraded system returns to service, which is anticipated in early November.

The improvements are intended to enhance the plant’s treatment performance and operational reliability, helping support a more dependable water supply for Upcountry Maui. With the plant offline during the upgrade, available treatment capacity in the Upcountry water system will be temporarily reduced. Conserving water during the project will help manage demand and support dependable service for the community.

Customers are encouraged to reduce nonessential water use, particularly outdoor irrigation and other uses that can be postponed. Checking properties for leaks, watering yards less frequently and using water-efficient fixtures also can help reduce demand. Other simple conservation measures include taking shorter showers, running washing machines and dishwashers only when full, and turning off the tap when water is not needed.

DWS offers free water conservation devices to the public, including:

• Faucet aerators for kitchen and bathroom faucets
• Leak detection dye tablets to check toilets for leaks
• Moisture meters
• Water-saving showerheads
• Hose nozzles
• Toilet tank bags
• Hose timers

Conservation devices can be picked up at the DWS Water Resources Division in One Main Plaza, 2200 Main St., Suite 102, in Wailuku, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
