AI chatbots can be helpful tools, but they aren’t a substitute for real human connection or professional mental health care.

Because chatbots are designed to be supportive and engaging, they may unintentionally reinforce unhealthy thoughts or beliefs in people experiencing conditions such as severe anxiety, depression, or psychosis. They also can’t recognize warning signs of a mental health crisis or provide the same level of care as a trained mental health professional.

Another concern is overreliance. Since AI is available 24/7 and doesn’t judge, some people may begin to rely on it for emotional support instead of reaching out to family, friends, or healthcare providers. This can lead to increased isolation or delays in getting appropriate care.

AI can be a useful resource when used responsibly, but it’s best viewed as a tool, not a therapist. If you’re struggling with your mental health, it’s important to seek support from a qualified professional or someone you trust. If you’re experiencing a crisis, call or text 988, or call 911 if you or someone else is in immediate danger.
