3 Nights of Halloween fun at the MACC: Scary Stories and 2 Free Screenings

Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents both frightful and delightful nights with a series of shows that range from Tales of Indigenous Horror in the Castle Theater, which will appeal to teens and adults, and two FREE movie nights under the stars in the A&B Amphitheater and Yokouchi Pavilion. This includes one Scary Night Cinema and the MACC’s family favorite, Starry Night Cinema accompanied by the Imua Family Services Keiki Halloween Festival, joined to create a full evening fit for the whole family.
All combined, the three days leading up to Halloween has something for everyone at the MACC. Choose from live storytelling, iconic movies, spine-chilling moments, curdling screams, ear-to-ear smiles, uncontrollable laughter or merely shiver with anticipation … all are available at the MACC, just not all at the same time. Pick one, or all, that fits your 2026 Halloween desires.

THE LAND HAS SPOKEN: TALES OF INDIGENOUS HORROR
Wednesday, Oct. 28 | Castle Theater| 7 p.m.

The Land Has Spoken: Tales of Indigenous Horror brings traditional and modern indigenous ghost stories, curses, omens, and monsters to life using works by award-winning Native dark fiction writers.
Immerse yourself in a chilling radio-style drama with stories brought to life by an all-Indigenous cast of seasoned theater/TV/Film actors and eerie radio-style sound effects.

The Native American literature, folklore, and oral histories are full of haunting stories, curses, omens, and portents; menacing monsters, treacherous shapeshifters, and cunning tricksters. “The Land Has Spoken” brings these stories to life with tales by Native award-winning dark fiction writers Shane Hawk, enrolled Cheyenne-Arapaho, Hidatsa, and Citizen Potawatomi descent, and Andrea L. Rogers, citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Directed by the accomplished Kyla Tucaya Garcia, Taíno, and Andre Bouchard of Kootenai/Ojibwe/Pend Oreille/Bitterroot Salish descent.
Prepare to journey into the dark depths of Indigenous folklore with “The Land Has Spoken”. The only question that remains is… “Will you return?”
Recommended for ages 12 and up. Includes audio depictions of menacing monsters, shape shifters, and adult themes and topics. Parental discretion is advised.

SCARY NIGHT CINEMA – ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Shiver with anticipation for a fright-filled night of food, fun, and a free film screening of the cult classic film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show Hosted by Maui’s own Eric Gilliom.

About the Film: In this cult classic, sweethearts Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker (Meat Loaf) and a creepy butler (Richard O’Brien).
Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.” The evening will acknowledge the passing of Tim Curry, the original Dr. Frank-N-Furter. “I see you shiver with antici… pation,” Dr. Frank-N-Furter says.

STARRY NIGHT CINEMA featuring the film MONSTERS, INC. with Imua Family Services Keiki Halloween Festival
Friday, Oct. 30 | Gates 5 p.m. | Film 6:15 p.m.

Families with children of all ages are invited to join in for a FREE evening of spooky fun and community spirit.
This year’s festival features a lineup of fun activities perfect for our young keiki. Children will have the opportunity to explore dozens of trick-or-treat stations prepared by many generous nonprofit and community partner agencies and local businesses, guaranteeing that every little ghost and goblin has a frighteningly good time.
The festival will also feature critter-petting encounters for those looking to meet some friendly furry friends, live music, and activities where children can unleash their budding creativity, providing a fun space for imaginative play.
As the sun goes down, don’t forget to bring blankets for a FREE Screening of MONSTERS, INC.
Families will lounge in the open air while keiki enjoy the film, all while savoring the delicious offerings featured by our favorite local food trucks and vendors. Join us in celebrating Halloween with fun, creativity, and community at the island’s premier destination for the arts and the perfect locale to show off your most creative costumes. Trek on over with the entire family for a non-stop evening full of enchanting experiences!
ABOUT THE FILM: Lovable Sulley (John Goodman) and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) are the top scare team at MONSTERS, INC., the scream-processing factory in the monster world of Monstropolis. James P. Sullivan (Sulley) is one of its top scarers and is a huge, intimidating monster with blue fur, large purple spots and horns.
His scare assistant, best friend and roommate is Mike Wazowski, a green, opinionated, feisty little one-eyed monster.
Visiting from the human world is Boo (Mary Gibbs), a tiny girl who goes where no human has ever gone before. When Boo wanders into their world, it’s the monsters who are scared silly, and it’s up to Sulley and Mike to keep her out of sight and get her back home.
The film is rated G and has a running time of 1 hour and 32 minutes. Click HERE for the trailer. Film attendees for the Night Cinema Events should bring a low-back beach chair and/or a blanket to spread out on the A&B Amphitheater lawn for the film screening.
Food and beverages from local food trucks will be available. If the weather is inclement, the film will still be shown in Castle Theater; seating is first come/first seated. No coolers or outside food/beverages, including bottled water, are allowed.
In keeping with the MACC’s over 3 year dedication to supporting the victims of the wildfires, floods and hurricanes, patrons for ALL THREE OF THESE EVENTS are asked to bring non-perishable items for the Maui Food Bank.
