The Kīhei Community Association will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at ProArts Playhouse in Azeka Shopping Center, featuring candidates for three Maui County Council seats on the November general election ballot.
Candidates from the Upcountry, West Maui and Makawao-Haʻikū-Pāʻia districts are scheduled to appear, according to the association. The group said the Maui mayoral candidates did not accept its invitation to a debate, so it is focusing the evening on Council races.
Scheduled to appear at the event are Council candidates are Bobby Pahia and Jon Masaru Yokouchi for the Upcountry residency seat; Nohelani Uʻu-Hodgins and Stevie Kathryn Chung for the Makawao-Haʻikū-Pāʻia seat; and Tamara Paltin and Mark Tillman for the West Maui seat.
Maui County Council seats require that candidates live in residential districts. However, the candidates are elected at large. So, all voters in Maui County cast votes for all seven contested Council seats. Two seats were uncontested, and Council Members Keani Rawlin-Fernandez and Gabe Johnson were re-elected by default to their Molokaʻi and Lāna‘i residency seats, respectively.
The association encouraged residents to vote in all Council contests.
The association said it expects most voters to have received their ballots by the time of the meeting and hopes the forum will help them fill them out.
The meeting will also include an overview of the eight proposed county charter amendments on the November ballot. The association said many community members have expressed uncertainty about the proposals and that it aims to provide clear information about them.
Membership is not required to attend, though the association encourages it. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation for the association’s Maui Food Bank drive.
