The Sewing Hui of Maui is accepting applications for a new Bridal & Formalwear Alterations Training Program designed to help Maui residents develop the skills and knowledge needed to establish their own alterations businesses.

Funded by the County of Maui Office of Economic Development, the program will provide 120 hours of training to five selected participants, including 90 hours of specialized sewing instruction and 30 hours of business education.

Participants will learn professional bridal fittings, bodice alterations, corsetry, lace and beadwork, multilayer hems, bustles, and other techniques used in altering wedding gowns and formalwear. The business curriculum will cover creating a business plan, marketing, pricing, financial management, and exceptional customer service.

The program will be led by Jennifer Oberg, founder and director of The Sewing Hui of Maui, who previously operated a successful bridal alterations and custom dressmaking shop in Makawao for many years. Oberg also brings extensive professional experience in costume design and garment construction.

“Having operated my own bridal and dressmaking business here on Maui, I know how important it is to combine excellent sewing skills with good business practices and exceptional customer service,” said Oberg. “Our goal is to give these five participants the training, confidence, and professional connections they need to establish successful businesses of their own.”

At the conclusion of the program, participants will present their work to industry professionals, receiving feedback and establishing professional connections. Each participant who successfully completes the program will receive a $2,000 business startup stipend.

The program is open to Maui residents with basic sewing skills and a serious interest in developing a professional alterations business. Applicants will be selected through a written application and interview process.

Classes are anticipated to begin in December 2026 and continue through summer 2027, with scheduling developed around participants’ availability.

Enrollment is limited to five participants. Applications are now being accepted.
