Runners begin their 5K run last year during Hale Kau Kau’s annual “Stomp Out Hunger” fundraising event. This year, the event is set for Halloween, 8 a.m. Oct. 31 beginning and ending at St. Theresa Church, located at 25 West Lipoa St. in Kīhei. PC: Joanne OKane

Hale Kau Kau, St. Theresa Church’s meals ministry, provided 6,525 meals on Maui in September, the most in a single month in the organization’s 35-year history, according to Barry Rosenfeld, president of the Hale Kau Kau Advisory Board.

The daily meals program delivered 103 meals on average every night to homebound kūpuna and people with disabilities, Rosenfeld said. It also served 81 meal plates nightly at its Hale Kau Kau window at St. Theresa Church in Kīhei.

Hale Kau Kau gave 200 meals last month, as needed, to the Lahaina Rescue and Recovery Center and the Maui Rescue Mission.

In September, the group also started a weekday outreach program. Monday through Friday, the Hale Kau Kau van hands out afternoon meals at Keolahou Church, Kalama Park and Kamaʻole Beach Park III.

The ministry’s work depends on volunteers and fundraising, Rosenfeld said. The group’s annual Stomp Out Hunger fundraiser is set for 8 a.m. Oct. 31. Participants can choose a 5K run or a one-mile walk, beginning and ending at the church’s property, located at 25 West Lipoa St. in Kīhei. The event will include breakfast, door prizes and fellowship. Halloween costumes are welcome.
