Nāpili confined space rescue. PC: Maui Fire Department.

A 72-year-old resident was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after falling roughly six feet into a below-ground electrical vault on his property in Nāpili.

Fire crews responded to the incident on the 5100 block of Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway at around 2:41 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2026. Personnel from Engine 11, Engine 3, Ladder 3, Rescue 10, and a battalion chief arrived on scene to perform the confined space rescue.

Hawaiian Electric personnel assisted firefighters by de-energizing electrical power to the vault, allowing crews to safely extricate the man, who suffered a laceration to his groin.

The rescue concluded at 3:51 p.m., and the patient was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center via Reach 48 Air Ambulance.
