Hoʻoulu Lāhui is the recipient of a $500,000 grant that will support the Native Hawaiian community through the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The grant will help to reinforce and strengthen Native Hawaiians’ connections to ʻohana (family), moʻomeheu (culture) and ʻāina (land and water) and support work in OHA’s Mana I Maoli Ola Strategies and Outcomes.

“The purpose of the project is to support the acquisition of a public facility in Panaʻewa, Hilo, ensuring Kua O Ka Lā Charter School a permanent home and the ability to provide Hawaiian focused education and community support services for generations,” organization leaders said.

“This important OHA funding supports our final stages of recovery after the loss of our 600 acre site including the Kua O Ka Lā Charter School campus site at Puʻalaʻa to the 2018 Kilauea eruption,” said Board President Keonelehua Kalawe. “It has been a long road to recovery and this funding will help ensure local control and stability for the school, community and ʻohana for generations to come.”

Hoʻoulu Lahui Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, formed in 1995, with the purpose of awakening Hawaiian culture, values, beliefs and lifestyle in partnership with the community in order to achieve unity, harmony and total well-being (lōkahi).
