The County of Kauaʻi announced that its Housing Agency has acquired 155 acres of vacant land in Līhuʻe for future affordable housing development, marking another significant step toward expanding housing opportunities for Kauaʻi residents.

Purchased from Grove Farm Properties, Inc. for $3.7 million, the property is expected to accommodate approximately 400 to 500 new homes, based on preliminary assessments of the site’s buildable land.

Once developed, the project will become the County’s fourth master-planned affordable housing subdivision, adding to ongoing efforts to create permanently affordable homeownership opportunities for Kauaʻi’s working families.

“Every opportunity to create more housing brings us one step closer to helping local families put down roots and build their future here on Kaua‘i. We’re grateful to Grove Farm for being such a great partner and for working with us to make this opportunity possible,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “While this property has the potential to provide hundreds of new homes, it’s important that we take the time to plan thoughtfully and listen to the community as we shape what comes next. Our goal is to create a neighborhood that serves our residents for generations to come.”

While the estimated number of homes provides an initial picture of the property’s potential, the County will undertake a community-based master planning process to help shape the future development. This process will allow KCHA to take a closer look at the site’s opportunities and constraints, while gathering community input to help determine the number and types of homes, as well as the amenities and other features that may be incorporated into the subdivision.

The master planning process seeks to establish a more detailed vision for the property and guide future development decisions. The timeline for the planning process and subsequent development has not yet been determined.

“The County of Kaua‘i remains committed to pursuing long-term solutions to Kauaʻi’s housing needs by creating more opportunities for local families to find and maintain a place to call home,” according to a County news release.
