UPDATE: Landfill Fire Continues to Burn, but Contained
By Rodney S. Yap
Maui Fire Department crews from Kahului and Kula responded Sunday, June 2, to a 4:30 p.m. alarm for a two-acre fire at the Central Maui Landfill.
Airport firefighters along with county public works tanker, two landfill dozers and a tanker helped to contain the fire perimeter. Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga reported active burning throughout the night as the fire is 60% contained but continues to burn in the contained area. Crews stayed on the scene overnight.
On Saturday, June 1, MFD crews from Paia and Kahului responded to two cane fires approximately 150 feet apart off Holomua Road. Mainaga said the cause of the fires are suspicious and appeared to have been started at the same time.
Crews from Wailuku and Kahului responded to another fire about 30 minutes later of Kama’aina Road in the Mokulele area. The three-acre cane fire was extinguished and there were no injuries reported at either incident.
