16 Rescued from High Surf in South Maui, Caution Advised
By Maui Now Staff
Ocean safety officers on Maui are urging the public to exercise caution today after 16 people were rescued from high surf conditions on Friday, county officials said.
There were also more than 100 public safety contacts with beach goers yesterday as ocean safety officials took precautionary measures to prevent accident and injury, authorities said.
County officials say the surf was between 8 to 10 feet yesterday, and is expected to be in the 4 to 6 foot range today, with occasional 8-foot swells.
“People were caught in the rip current and couldn’t get back in,” said Ocean Safety Operations Chief Archie Kalepa in a press release. “As you know, Mākena is kind of a dangerous beach, even for the most experienced swimmer,” he said.
“Always seek the advice of a lifeguard before entering the water if you are unsure. Best rule is always: When in doubt, don’t go out,” said Kalepa.
