The state Department of Transportation has several road projects planned for Maui this week that will reduce traffic to a single lane in some locations, and will result in brief delays for motorists.

On the Hāna Highway, slope stabilization work is planned in the Keʻanae area between milepost 10.4 near the Garden of Eden and milepost 16 near the Keʻanae Peninsula Road, officials said. According to the DOT, work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

On the Honoapiʻilani Highway, there are three projects planned this week including work in the following areas:

  • In Lahaina, crews continue repairs to fix erosion damage that has undermined the foundation of the shoulder lane. The Kihei-bound lane of Honoapiʻilani Highway has been shifted to the mauka side of the road between Front Street and Kai Hele Kū Street, fronting the Launipoko State Park. DOT officials note that speed limits are reduced approaching the work zone.
  • In Kāʻana-pali, utility installations will result in a right lane closure of the Honoapiʻilani Highway in the northbound direction between Lower Honoapiʻilani Road and Leialiʻi Parkway, between 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • In Olowalu, pavement resurfacing will result in the nightly single-lane closure of the Honoapiʻilani Highway from 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., between Olowalu Village Road and the Māʻalaea Boat Harbor Road. During the roadwork, DOT officials say traffic will be contraflowed utilizing the remaining lane of travel, resulting in brief delays.

On the Kahekili Highway, crews will be conducting drainage cleaning in the Honokōhau area from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., between milepost 36, in the vicinity of Honokōhau Bay, and milepost 42, in the vicinity of Papanahoa Gulch. DOT officials say the work will result in an alternating single lane closure of the highway in both directions, with a contraflow implemented in the remaining open lane.

Road closures are not planned on Thursday, July 4, due to the Independence Day holiday.
