Reception and Documentary for Local Artist Taryn Alessandro

This Saturday at 5 p.m. Turnbull Fine Art in Paia will be hosting a special reception for Maui-based mixed media artist Taryn Alessandro.

According to the artist, her work is “all about combining found objects with a rich, mixed media painting style.”

As an artist, one of Alessandro’s goals is to invigorate the world of fine art with her creations. All the while, her imagery captures and evokes Maui with themes of beach scenes, beautiful women, naked butts, and surfboards.

After laying down the original images, Alessandro then takes common found objects – scraps of fabric, paper, foil, sand, glass, aluminum cans, cardboard, and broken jewelry – and works them into her pieces.

A scrap of fabric may become the ruffle on a bikini or ripped up paper waves in the ocean.

“I love experimentation, and I always welcome new ideas and materials into my work. Each piece is a new adventure for me. Creating art completely immerses me. More than a passion, it almost becomes an obsession.” Alessandro commented.

Her piece, “Reflections,” was selected for the 2013 edition of American Art Collector, an annual publication featuring 250 pieces of art representing the American Art movement for that year. Alessandro was also featured in Volume VIII of International Contemporary Masters, and she was voted Maui Time’s “Best Local Visual Artist of Maui” in both 2011 and 2012.

The evening will feature wine, pupus, a live painting demonstration by Alessandro, and the unveiling of an original piece of artwork completed during the event.

In addition, the premiere of “Sensationism,” a short documentary about Alessandro’s unique creative process and brand of art, premieres at 6:30 p.m.

The outcome of a successful Kickstarter project, the film delves into the story of Alessandro’s Maui lifestyle, follows her as she creates works of art, interviews clients, and shows how the artist intends to take her artwork to the next level.

“Be prepared to laugh, learn, and get inspired as you get an intimate view into the life of Taryn’s artistic world through the film as well as through her body of work,” said Christine Turnbull, owner of Turnbull Fine Art.

The event is from 5 to 8 p.m. and is free to the public.
