A family of four from San Diego, California, is safe after running into difficulty while paddle boarding on Tuesday afternoon in waters off of the Outrigger Nāpili Shores in West Maui, officials said.
The incident was reported at around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, about 40-yards offshore, according to an incident report.
Fire fighters from Nāpili, the department’s Lahaina Rescue boat, and a rescue watercraft from Ocean Safety were dispatched to assist the ocean goers at an area fronting the hotel’s Gazebo restaurant, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
According to Mainaga, personnel aboard a rescue watercraft brought the paddle boarders to shore, with all arriving safely on land by 2 p.m.
He said the group, which included a father, mother, and two teenage daughters, had experienced difficulty making it back to shore.
No injuries were reported.
