A small brush fire came within a foot of a Wailuku home on Thursday morning, but was extinguished before causing any damages.

The incident was reported at 10:41 a.m. at the rear of a residence on Liholiho Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters reportedly found an area of brush on fire located directly behind two homes.

Maui Fire Capt. Bram DenHaan said neighbors had knocked down the flames with garden hoses, and alerted and evacuated occupants of the homes before firefighters arrived.

He said that although the structures did not sustain damages, the overgrown grass burned to less than one-foot from a rear patio deck of one home.  The fire burned an area estimated at approximately 40- by 60-feet, Capt. DenHaan said.
