Molokai’s School Earns High Score in New Report Card
By Wendy Osher
Molokai’s Maunaloa Elementary school earned high marks in the state’s new report card.
The school was the only one in Maui County to earn high performance classification with 343 points out of a total of 400, under the state’s new Strive HI Performance System.
Maunaloa is among an elite list of schools identified in the “recognition” category, representing the top 5% of schools in the state with the highest-performing and highest growth levels in achievement, graduation rates, and achievement gaps.
On Maui, there were two schools that fell into a “focus” category, requiring a high level of state intervention and involvement.
With just 97 points, ʻĪao Intermediate was among the list of schools that fell into the third tier of performance or “focus” category. The list also included Lahainaluna High School, which was classified as having a large performance gap. Lahainaluna had 184 points with math performance at 34%, and reading performance at 64%.
All other schools in the county received a “continuous improvement” or second tier classification. This is where the majority of schools across the state, 75-85%, were placed. Schools in this category required a low level of state intervention.
Statewide, education officials say more Hawaiʻi public schools students are graduating on time and enrolling in college. The results show the achievement gap has narrowed 12% over the past two years, with the on-time graduation rate at 83%, and college enrollment at 63%, both representing a steady rise over time.
