Water service rates for multi-family dwellings on Maui will be considered during the next meeting of the Water Resources Committee, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Oct. 2, council member Michael Victorino announced.

Water rates for multi-family dwellings increased by 15 cents per 1,000 gallons to $4.95, under the FY2014 budget which took effect on July 1, officials said.

The increase was implemented for customers that exceed consumption of 15,000 gallons of water per month.

“The rate for 15,000 gallons is easily attained within a couple of days for most of Maui County’s multi-unit properties with only one meter,” said Victorino in a media release.

Victorino, who chairs the Council’s Water Resources Committee continued saying, “Families that use less water than neighbor units – even if they were away or on vacation – will still have to pay the top tier rate, according to our current structure.”
