Registration has started for vessel operators seeking permits to troll waters around Kahoʻolawe during specified dates in October.

The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission announced its trolling schedule which includes two weekends in October: Oct. 12 to 13, and Oct. 26 to 27.

Vessel operators can register for permits to troll by calling Dean at 243-5889; emailing [email protected]; downloading a registration packet online at kahoolawe.hawaii.gov; or picking up a packet in person at the Division of Boating and Recreation office located at 101 Māʻalaea Boat Harbor Road.

In addition to the $25 registration fee, permitted vessels must also file a catch report for fish caught within the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve.

Officials with the KIRC say access to waters within the Reserve is highly restricted because of the continued presence of unexploded ordnance, as well as for the protection of marine resources within the Reserve.
