Two people were injured, one critically in a collision near the Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku Thursday night.
The incident was reported at 5:08 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, on Mahalani Street just north of the Maui Lani Parkway intersection.
According to police reports, the driver of a brown 2005 Ford Focus was headed north on Mahalani Street when he crossed completely left of center and collided into a red 1995 Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The operator of the Focus sustained critical-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision, according to a report filed by Maui Police Sgt. William Hankins with the Department’s Vehicle Homicide Section.
Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt and an airbag was deployed.
A child passenger in the Dodge pickup sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Police say the child was secured in a rear-facing child safety seat positioned in the middle-back seat of the pickup truck. The driver of the pickup was uninjured, police said.
Authorities say alcohol and speed are still under investigation as possible factors in the crash.
