Mayor to Discuss Vision for “Central Maui Regional Park”
By Wendy Osher
Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa hosts a news conference this afternoon to share his vision for a “Central Maui Regional Park” in Waikapū.
The facility will include sports fields and courts on an estimated 209 acres located off of the Kuihelani Highway near East Waiko Road.
Following today’s press conference, Mayor Arakawa and Wailuku Councilman Michael Victorino will attempt to hit a home run ball out of the the park, in an effort to symbolize activities that the county hopes to see taking place on the property in the future. The Mayor will be at bat and Victorino will be pitching.
The county facility is next to a separate 65-acre state-funded Sports Complex planned for development in the master-planned Wai’ale subdivision in Waikapū. Last week, Lieutenant Governor Shan Tstutsui announced the release of $4.7 million for construction of the state facility.
