Home Business Bill to Address Nuisance Activity Gets Hearing

A series of public meetings are planned to receive input on a pending Home Business Bill, to permit and regulate home-based businesses in certain zoning districts, Councilmember Don Couch announced today.

“I want to encourage entrepreneurship and support residents who want to earn a living from home,” said Planning Committee Chair, Couch in a government issued press release.  “However, we need to address what constitutes a ‘nuisance’ or other inappropriate commercial activities that potentially impact community character and quality of life for neighbors.”

According to Couch, the committee will review and discuss allowable types of home businesses and develop appropriate regulations for particular operations.

A series of six meetings hosted by the Council’s Planning Committee, will take place over the next several weeks, between Oct. 28 and Dec. 3 at the following locations:

• Monday, Oct. 28: Kīhei Community Center, Main Hall, on East Līpoa Street;
• Wednesday, Oct. 30: Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center, Social Hall in Pukalani;
• Tuesday, Nov. 5: Helene Social Hall, on Keawa Place in the East Maui town of Hāna;
• Tuesday, Nov. 14: Council Chamber, 8th Floor on South High Street in Wailuku;
• Wednesday, Nov. 20: Mitchell Pauole Center, Main Hall, on Ainoa Street in Kaunakakai, on Molokaʻi; and
• Tuesday, Dec. 3: Lahaina Civic Center, Social Hall, at 1840 Honoapiʻilani Highway in West Maui.

All meetings are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Since there is no scheduled meeting on the island of Lānaʻi, residents from the area are invited to contact the Lānaʻi District office at (808) 565-7094 for assistance in submitting testimony.  More information can also be obtained via email at pc.committee@mauicounty.us.
