Visitor Dies in Apparent Drowning in Kāʻanapali

A visitor died in an apparent drowning after being pulled from waters in the area of the Kāʻanapali Shores in West Maui on Thursday, police said.

The man has since been identified as Brian Avenel, 71, of Mandeville, Louisiana, said Maui Police Lieutenant William Juan.

Police say officers arrived at the public beach access area to the south of the Kāʻanapali Shores to find medics and fire personnel performing CPR on the man in an apparent “drowning-type case.”

The incident was reported at around 12:37 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, according to police reports.

Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and the man subsequently died at the scene, said Lt. Juan.

The incident has since been classified as a fatal miscellaneous accident.
