Goodfellow Bros. construction crews are conducting emergency road stabilization work today at the Waiakoa Culvert, located on South Kīhei Road, north of the old Suda Store location.

The work will take place over about an eight hour period, beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28., and concluding at around 3:30 p.m.

Detours to the Piʻilani Highway via Uwapo Road will be in place for northbound traffic during the road work.

The Waiakoa Gulch channels storm water runoff from the slopes of Haleakalā to the Pacific Ocean.

According to information filed by the Department of Public Works, there are two existing concrete drainage culverts, measuring 48-inches and 24-inches in diameter, that allow the runoff to flow under South Kīhei Road to the ocean.

“Long-term erosion, flooding, and over-topping of the culverts from rain events has undermined the up-slope shoulder of Waiakoa Gulch culverts at South Kīhei Road,” according to a final environmental assessment seeking improvements in the area.
