UPDATE: 7.6 Solomon Islands Quake; No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi

UPDATE:  10:43 a.m. 4/12/14: BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED AND THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake (downgraded from 8.3) reported at 10:14 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014, in the Solomon Islands region, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles and was located near the following cities according to information compiled by the US Geological Survey:

• 102km (63mi) SSE of Kirakira, Solomon Islands
• 329km (204mi) SE of Honiara, Solomon Islands
• 704km (437mi) NW of Luganville, Vanuatu
• 932km (579mi) SE of Arawa, Papua New Guinea
• 963km (598mi) NW of Port-Vila, Vanuatu
