A Maui man is hospitalized in critical condition following a moped accident on South Kīhei Road Monday night.
Police say the 51-year-old Wailuku man was traveling southbound on South Kīhei Road at around 7:38 p.m. on Monday, June 16, when he lost control of the blue 2013 Kwang Yang moped he was driving, and struck the rear of a multi-purpose vehicle traveling in the same direction.
The incident occurred north of Alanui Ke Aliʻi Drive and forced the closure of South Kīhei Road between Kaiau Place and Alanui Ke Aliʻi Drive for about three hours while police conducted an investigation.
Police say the operator of the moped sustained “critical life-threatening” injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
According to police reports, the 36-year-old Honolulu man driving the 2013 white Nissan SUV, and his 36-year-old passenger, also from Honolulu did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.
Police say the moped operator was not using a helmet at the time of the crash. The cause remains under investigation.
