Online security breach reported at UH may have exposed 53,000

The University of Hawaii began notifying approximately 53,000 individuals of a recent security breach that may have exposed personal information.  The individuals were listed in a system database, housed on a computer server used by the Park Office at the UH Manoa campus.  The information included more than 40,000 Social Security numbers and 200 credit card numbers, as well as personal information, names, addresses, and driver’s license numbers. 

University officials say the breach occurred on May 30, 2010 and was discovered on June 15.  The system was isolated, and an investigation was launched. 

A press release issued by the University today says social security numbers are no longer used for parking transactions, and are being purged from all current and historic databases. 

The two main group of individuals were identified as either UH Manoa faculty and staff employed in 1998, and anyone who had business with the UH Manoa Parking Office between January 1, 1998 and June 30, 2009.
