Site Ispections Today for Proposed Service Center Sites

The Council’s Budget and Finance Committee will conduct site inspections today, July 21, of proposed land acquisitions in Kahului and Wailuku.

The proposals include the acquisition of a 4-acre, seven lot property at the Maui Business Park – Phase II in Kahului for $7.1 million.

The deal calls for the donation of 35.5 acres in Pāʻia from landowner Alexander & Baldwin as part of the deal.

The other proposal calls for the acquisition of a five-acre, three unit, site at the Kehalani Village Center in Wailuku for $6.5 million.

The owner, RCFC Kehalani, is offering to donate an additional 14.4 acres near the corner of Kuikahi and Waiale Road in Wailuku as part of the deal.

The parcels initially surfaced as potential options as the county faces the end of a lease at its service center site located at the Maui Mall in Kahului.

Earlier this year, Mayor Arakawa recommended that the committee consider both parcels, noting that the county would be able to build facilities at both sites, and relocate departments that are dealing with permits, leases, and contracts on non-county owned land.

“I believe the committee will receive a more complete picture by personally visiting the sites,” said committee chair Mike White is a press release statement. “Two very good options are before us, but we must exercise our due diligence to ensure we pay a fair price and make the best long-term decision for residents.”
