Renovation Funds Released for UHMC Ceramics Building

An estimated $39 million in funding was released for capital improvement projects at various campuses across the University of Hawaiʻi System, including funds for the UH Maui College campus in Kahului.

The funding was split into two allocations: $29 million for system-wide health, safety and code requirements; and $10 million for minor CIP projects for campuses within the UH community college system.

The former Ceramics Building at the UH Maui College campus has been identified as a project that will receive funding for renovation.

In releasing the funds, Governor Neil Abercrombie issued a press release saying, “These projects, at campuses from Līhue to Hilo, are long-term investments in our state university system, an anchor of our island community.  They address needed repairs, maintenance and upgrades to ensure functional academic environments and accessible, affordable higher education opportunities for the people of Hawaiʻi.”

Additional projects identified by the governor as part of the funding allocation include the following:

• Construction funds for health and safety projects at UH Manoa including: accessibility improvements, sewer and storm drain upgrades, health and safety improvements at Lyon Arboretum, and walkway upgrades.
• Construction funds for health and safety projects at UH Hilo including: a lead roof replacement of Hale Kehau, a Kawili Street pedestrian overpass, an emergency shelter, traffic safety improvements at Panaʻewa Farms, sidewalk/crosswalk upgrades at Kapiʻolani and Lanikāula Streets, and emergency generators.
• Renovation of the cafeteria at Honolulu CC,
• Refurbishment of ʻŌhiʻa Auditorium at Kapiʻolani CC,
• Renovation of the Diamond Head portables at Leeward CC,
• Renovation of storage space to science lab/classroom at Hawaiʻi CC, and
• Renovation of the Fine Arts I Building at Kauaʻi CC.
