Swell Generated by Storm “Marie” Prompts High Surf Advisory

An east swell generated by Tropical Storm Marie will begin entering Hawaiian waters tonight, creating advisory level surf along the east facing shores of Maui County, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency issued a high surf advisory for both the east and south facing shores from 6 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014.

The agency says a separate “moderate-sized south swell” will also enter Hawaiian Waters tonight, contributing to the elevated surf conditions along the south shores on Thursday.

According to the NWS forecast, surf on both east and south shores will be in the 6 to 9 foot range, and will remain elevated through Friday night.

Beach goers are advised that swimming may be difficult and dangerous due to strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong rip currents.

The agency advisory states, “Always heed lifeguard advice and know your limits.  When in doubt, don’t go out.”
