Police on Kauaʻi have identified the man who died while hiking Thursday night on the Kalalau Trail as Zachary Rose, 29, of Maui.
Rose was hiking with friends at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, near mile marker 7 of the trail, in an area known as “Red Hill,” when he fell over the edge and landed on the rocks about 50 feet below, according to a press release issued by Kauaʻi police.
Police say a fellow hiker climbed down the cliff in an attempt to assist Rose, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Coast Guard rescuers flew into the area on Thursday night and located the group.
The man with Rose had suffered a leg injury and was flown to the Līhu‘e Airport, but declined medical treatment by Medics arriving on scene.
Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 took over recovery efforts at first light on Friday morning.
Kauaʻi police say Rose’s body was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The remaining three hikers in Rose’s party were also flown out of Kalalau on Friday morning.
Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, is assisting the friends and family of the Maui man.
Police continue their investigation of the incident, but as of Friday said foul play was not a suspected factor in the cause of Rose’s death.
An autopsy is scheduled for this week.
