Traffic Incident at Maui Marathon Nets Grand Jury Indictment

The man accused of driving through a crowd near the start of the Maui Marathon, was arrested on a grand jury indictment according to new information released today by Maui Police.

Rustyn Wesley Pajimola-Aiu, 22, of Kahului, was arrested on Tuesday, Oct. 14, for alleged second degree assault, first degree reckless endangering, and operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Pajimola-Aiu was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at last report.

The charges stem from a traffic incident at the Maui Marathon, reported at around 5:05 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului.

According to earlier reports, Maui police said Rustyn Pajimola-Aiu was driving a 2014 Acura four-door sedan within the parking lot and attempted to exit the parking area via the intersection at Onehee Avenue and Wakea Avenue where a crowd of participants were gathered for the start of the marathon.

Following the incident, police issued a report saying Pajimola-Aiu drove through the crowd, and struck a 53-year-old Kahului man, who was not a participant in the marathon.

The victim was treated and released by first responders after sustaining what police described as minor injuries.
